NUTRITION AND HEALTH

Dr. Cranton's philosophy is that no health, healing, and longevity program is complete without closely examining what you have been putting into your body -- What have you been breathing? What drugs have you been taking (prescription and non-prescription)?  What have you been eating?

Dr. Cranton's experience has shown that adjusting one's diet and lifestyle often has a beneficial effect on chronic health problems.  It is well known that a change in diet can help a diabetic normalize blood sugar, result in weight loss, or lower cholesterol.  However, a change in diet can also result in more energy, clearer thinking, an improved immune response, and faster healing.

As a part or your medical examination, you should be asked about your dietary habits and medication history.  This information should be incorporated into a personal nutrition program based on your current health and goals for the future.   I have achieved the most success using a combination of the following:

DESTRUCTIVE HABITS

It is important to eliminate the use of tobacco. This applies to cigarettes, pipe tobacco, cigars, snuff or chewing tobacco.  It has been a consistent observation that patients who continue to use tobacco have demonstrated less improvement and for a shorter time for any health or preventive medicine program,  in comparison to non-smokers.

Relatively healthy adults are often able to tolerate the moderate use of alcoholic beverages without generating more free radicals than they can detoxify.  Anyone who drinks more than occasional alcoholic beverages in moderation risks harmful free radical damage.  Victims of chronic degenerative diseases should minimize the consumption of alcohol.

EXERCISE

Finally, sustained physical exercise is very helpful.  Even a brisk 45-minute walk several times per week will help to improve and maintain health and well being.  Benefits often include stress relief, improved circulation, improved blood pressure, lower "bad" cholesterol, increased "good" cholesterol, increased energy, decreased anxiety, improved sleep, improved bowel habits, improved digestion, and weight loss.  Health care professionals should work with you to design an individual exercise plan based on your abilities and goals.
